I arrived at the farm today to find the patter of tiny feet all over our raked roots bed... pheasants after worms again. Sowed 1 row Early Nantes carrots, 1 row Jamie Oliver's special purple carrots (moment of weakness in Homebase the other day - they are purple!), 1 row spring onions, 1 row Detroit2 beetroots and stripy beetroots. Then I realised the last two shouldn't be sown until April - too late! We'll see what happens. I also extended the existing onion rows with calendula, which will be very pretty, very soon.
Covered the lot with chicken wire and netting - no more pattering birds dust bathing in this wee corner!

roots (4)
Cate, Malcolm and Sarah met up today to get Cate's early nantes carrots in. We dug a third roots bed, limed, raked and drilled.

roots roots roots
David, Nenya and Sarah planned to spend Saturday afternoon at the farm drinking tea, eating cake and doing a bit of sowing. Haha. So here's what actually happened:
Nenya dug up a patch for courgettes and herbs, previously covered by paving slabs. Three toads had to be re-housed in the process!
David prepared two more beds for roots and spread lime.
We sowed pronto, detroit and golden beetroot, round, autumn king and early nantes carrot, white and pink rabano, radishes, parsnips, spring onions as well as red and while seed onions. It's really starting to look like we're growing stuff now!

Carrots and tatties
I'm gonna grow carrots. I'm going grow orange carrots, red carrots, blue carrots, long pointy ones, short round ones and some of those huge amazining conjoined octuplet carrots you only get at the farmers market*.
And potatoes. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of them. And beetroot and parsnips.
Then I'm going to eat them all until I burst apart at the ears and nipples (my mum told me that's where the joins are). And then I'm going to eat some more.

*(the photo to the right isn't an actual carrot, by the way, it's a man in a carrot costume, but that's the only way I could give you an accurate idea of the size my carrots are going to end up)
